The Chumash also believed that all human and supernatural beings sought to gain more power over good and evil. To do so, the person practiced secret rituals through which he called upon a dream helper. The helper could be an animal, plant, insect, distant star, planet, or a natural force such as thunder. Among the most important helpers were Bear, Eagle, Beaver, Thunder, and Whirlwind. Dream helpers could be called upon to assist with basket making, a long canoe journey, or gambling, or in times of peril from enemy attack or natural disaster.
